Lowcountry Presbytery
Our Story
The Lowcountry Presbytery is a presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). As Presbyterians, we believe that the Lord has structured his church in a connected way, so that local congregations are part of a larger network of churches which provide accountability, support, and resources (see Acts 15:6-16:4; 1 Cor. 16:1-4). In the PCA, we have local congregations; presbyteries, which serve as the regional expression of the church; and the General Assembly, which serves as the national expression of the church.
The Lowcountry Presbytery is the regional body of the PCA in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, encompassing Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Calhoun, and Orangeburg counties. Our presbytery was formed in 2015, when the Palmetto Presbytery split into three smaller presbyteries.
As a presbytery, we plant and support local churches; train, equip, examine, and ordain men to pastoral ministry; and connect churches to mission works throughout the world. Our presbytery oversees two college ministries through Reformed University Fellowship (RUF): one at the College of Charleston (Seth Gurley) and one at South Carolina State University (Joel Brown). We also participate in hospital chaplaincy at MUSC in Charleston and work with the denominational committees and agencies in a variety of ministries.
The presbytery gathers regularly to conduct the business of the regional church, to pray with and support one another, and to promote the ministries under our oversight. Through our committees, officers, and commissioners, we conduct a variety of administrative, operational, and ministerial works.
Since our formation, the Lord has blessed our presbytery, increasing our number of churches, bringing new ministers and missionaries to our bounds, and bearing fruit through his church. Our desire is to glorify Christ and to participate in the Great Commission, and we are pleased that the Lord calls and equips us to do that work.
